The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions in various parts of the world. It is not an official program of Rotary International and is not under its control. The RLI seeks to have Rotary Clubs in member districts identify those Rotarians who seem to have the POTENTIAL for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide those so identified with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for voluntary organizations.

WE RECOMMEND FRANK TALK IV

Past R.I. President Frank Devlyn and David Forward have written a book called Frank Talk IV on Leadership. The book highlights the opportunities Rotary provides for leadership education, formal and informal. It is a very readable and thoughtful book and we recommend it for all Rotarians. All proceeds go to The Rotary Foundation. For ordering copies of the book, see www.frankdevlyn.org and click on the book pictured on the website.

Random Thoughts About Leadership

What is the role of "experience" in leadership? David Brooks, noted columnist of the New York Times, has talked about two views of leadership. One view, sometimes called the "conservative" or "elitist view", honors classical education, hard earned knowledge, experience and prudence. But for the "populist view" book knowledge is suspect but practical knowledge is respected. Says Mr. Brooks, the elitists favor deliberation, but the populists favor instinct. In Mr. Brooks opinion, the key element of good leadership is "prudence".

"Prudence is acquired through experience", says Mr. Brooks. "It is not average people choosing average leaders. It is average people with the wisdom to select the best prepared."  Rotarians usually bring much experience in matters outside and inside of Rotary. Leadership education is one such experience in a well-crafted educational program.

Welcome New Divisions and Districts

RLI welcomes the new Australia Northern Division. The initial member district is District 9650, a part of New South Wales. Chairman of the new division is PDG John Boag, a very active participant in Rotary International. He served as Vice-Chair of the Council on Legislation in 2007. The District Governor of District 9650 is Ken Hall, who is characterized by PDG Cathy Roth, Regional Vice-Chair of the ANZO Region as "an absolutely outstanding governor".

Personnel Update

RLI welcomes two new International Regional Vice-Chairs. PRID Yoshikazu Minamisono has been appointed as the Regional Vice-Chair for East Asia. PRID Yoshi also serves as the Chair of the RLI Japan Division. He served on the R.I. Board of Directors during 2004-6 and now is a member of the R.I. Strategic Plan Committee. RLI now has ten International Regional Vice-Chairs. PDG Hoe-Beng Fong remains as International Regional Vice Chair for South East Asia.

PDG James R. Henry, Jr. has been appointed International Regional Vice-Chair for Eastern United States. He succeeds PDG Dan Spencer, who stepped down because of family and business responsibilities. PDG Jim Henry serves a region from Zone 28 to Zone 34 (new zone numbers). He was the founding Chair of the Sunshine Division (Zone 34) and also serves as a Regional Rotary International Membership Coordinator.

We thank Dan Spencer for his key role in RLI over many years and look forward to his renewed participation in the future.

PDG Dorothy Britten of Nova Scotia, Canada has been elected as Chair of the Atlantic/Atlantique Division, replacing former Chair Mark Brown of Newfoundland, Canada who completed his term of office. The Division consists of the Canadian Maritime Provinces and part of the USA State of Maine.

Ticket Sales Have Begun for RLI Convention Breakfast

Ticket sales for the Annual RLI Convention Breakfast meeting in England have opened. The event has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 7:30 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Birmingham NEC, adjacent to the convention center (National Exhibition Center). The cost of the full breakfast is US$ 45.00 per person. A flyer with information for the purchase of tickets has been sent to our entire email list.

We have previously reported that one of Rotary's most respected leaders, Past R.I. President Cliff Dochterman of California USA will be the featured speaker at the breakfast. RLI is also honored that R.I. Vice-President Monty Audenart and R.I. Director Michael Colasurdo, Sr. will bring greetings from the R.I. Board of Directors. Both R.I. Directors are also members of the RLI Senior Leaders Advisory Board. An additional speaker will be announced soon.

R.I. President D.K. Lee has been invited for remarks at the breakfast and we are awaiting his response. Tickets may be obtained from RLI Intl. Executive Director Michael Rabasca, 210 Thomas Road, Mendham, New Jersey 07945 USA.

Use Caution with "Friends Contact Groups"

There have been a flood of Internet Friends Groups asking people to list their friends to "keep in touch". Each person accepting the invitation is asked for certain personal information, some more than others. Because Rotary is an international organization, personal information may be spread all around the world. While a number of such groups may be legitimate, we suggest you use caution in joining such groups and carefully limit the personal information you provide. Especially in the USA there have been many scams designed to help the scammers in identify theft.

RLI PHILOSOPHY

"Having leadership skills does not alone assure good Rotary leadership. An effective Rotary leader must ALSO have Rotary knowledge, perspective about where Rotary has been, where it is now going and a vision of what Rotary can be."
