The Rotary Leadership Institute

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions in various parts of the world. It is not an official program of Rotary International and is not under its control. The RLI seeks to have Rotary Clubs in member districts identify those Rotarians who seem to have the POTENTIAL for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide those so identified with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for voluntary organizations.

Quote of the Month

"Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb."
—Winston Churchill

The Newly Revised RLI International Website is Up and Running

A completely revised international website is now up and running. It is more than 2/3 completed and the final items are expected to be posted on or before May 1. The site is divided into three major sections, 1-Information for Prospective RLI Districts, 2-Resource Information for RLI Members, and 3-Rotary Leadership Institute Organizational Information. Section 2 is under construction and is primarily based on a new Operations Manual for RLI Divisions that is being written by a special committee. The website will be updated frequently. See www.rotaryleadershipinstitute.org. A separate website contains RLI curriculum materials, training slides, etc. in several languages-more coming.

Random Thoughts About Leadership

The 2009 International Assembly produced a large number of wonderful speeches that raised important points that are so important for the future of Rotary. One of those great speeches was by our friend, Past R.I. President Luis Vicente Giay of Buenos Aires, the principal speaker at the RLI Breakfast at Los Angeles. Speaking on the topic of LEADERSHIP, Luis said, “First, you must understand that Rotary leadership is unlike other leadership. In other organizations or groups, someone issues an order and everyone obeys.” Then he goes on to speak of “horizontal leadership” . Quoting John Gardner, he continued, “The world is moved by highly motivated people, by enthusiasts, by men and women who want something very much or believe in something very much.”

At RLI, we remind our participants that Rotary leaders really have no “power” , but must rely on their ability to motivate, energize and convince others. Even in business and industry today, where there is much leverage available to leaders, there is a realization that motivating their employees is much more than salaries, perks and giving orders. John Maxwell, a noted writer on leadership, calls the type of leadership that is needed in a voluntary organization, “pure leadership” where leverage does not exist. It is obvious that many Rotary leaders do have “pure leadership” ability, because so many Rotarians are moved to great service by such leaders. Would that every Rotary CLUB leader had that type of leadership ability to assure the future of Rotary.

Editor's Note: Next month we will look at another great Intl. Assembly speech on Vocational Service by Past R.I. President Rajendra K. Saboo.

Welcome New Divisions/Districts

RLI is pleased to welcome the North Coast Division. The initial member districts are 6630 and 6600 in Ohio, USA. It is expected that additional districts in Zone 29 will become members of the division. Chair of the Division is District 6630 Governor Fran B. Bayless of Shaker Heights, Ohio. The District Governor of 6600 is David V. Daugherty of Mansfield, Ohio.

We also welcome Districts 6290 and 6380 as members of the newly formed Great Lakes Division in Michigan, USA and part of Ontario, Canada. The District Governor of 6290 is Robert Gandolfi of Houghton Lake, Michigan and the Governor of 6380 is Stanley N. Sherman of Royal Oak, Michigan. Chair of the new division is DG Renee Merchant of 6360. Governors-Elect John Salan and Judy Garver signed the agreement of membership in behalf of their district governors.

The two new divisions in Zone 29 are the result of strong support by R.I. Director Michael Johns and active efforts by PDG Dan Spencer, then Regional Vice-Chair for Eastern United States. Dan was a speaker at Director Johns' Zone Institute in Sandusky, Ohio. We thank them both for this achievement.

Welcome to a New Member of the Sr. Leaders Advisory Board

RLI welcomes R.I. Director Nominee Kenneth Grabeau of New Hampshire, USA as the newest member of the International RLI Senior Leaders Advisory Board. Ken was nominated from Zone 31 (now32) to serve on the R.I. Board of Directors during 2010-12. RLI Training Team in South Asia Tour

As this eBulletin is written two members of the International RLI Training Team are in South Asia to conduct a meeting of all India and Nepal Divisions in Delhi and faculty orientations and courses in Nepal, North India, South India and Western India. The training team consists of RLI Vice-Chair Knut Johnsen; RLI Secretary, Tam Mustapha; South Asia Intl. Regional Vice-Chair Binod Khaitan of Kolkata India and Western India Division Chair, Subhash Saraf of Pune, India. The meeting of all divisions in the region is one of a number of Regional RLI Meetings planned around the world under the leadership of Regional Vice-Chairs.
Around the RLI World

The Lebanon Division conducted a special program on February 28 and March 1 at the Ehden Country Club near Beirut. Participating in the program, in addition of those from Lebanon, were Rotarians from Egypt and Jordan. Leaders on the program were District 2450 Governor Zakaria El-Shafei of Egypt, RLI Chair for Lebanon Jamil Mouawad, PDG Farid Gebran, PDG Ignace Mouawad,  PP Michel Jazzar, Founding Chair of Lebanon Division, R. David Zein, R. Gilbert Doumit, Country Trainer Mario Nasard and DG Representative, Ronald Farra. Families were an important part of the event.

The Japan Division is moving steadily ahead under the leadership of PRID Yoshikazu Minamisono, Chair and Director-Elect Masahiro Kuroda, Vice-Chair. Faculty training was held in Hiroshima, District 2710 led by PDG Yoshihiro Sekiba, a member of the RLI International Training Team and former R.I. Intl. Training Leader. A Part I course followed. A Part II course is scheduled for March 22 in Goshogawara, District 2830. Recently started, the Division now has four member districts.

Indonesia RLI, part of the South East Asia Division held a successful course recently in Bandung. PDG Rudy Balmater is Chair for RLI in Indonesia.
February also saw the first Part II course in Australia, held in Melbourne, District 9800. The District RLI Chair is PDG John Wigley and the District Training Coordinator is PDG Ann White. Also present at the course was PDG Cathy Roth, RLI Intl. Regional Vice-Chair for the ANZO Region.

Editor's Note: RLI regrets its inability to include in each eBulletin all the hundreds of courses held around the world. Division course calendars are usually listed on division websites. The RLI Website division list includes website addresses for those divisions that have listed them. We will continue to highlight some of these division courses and events from time to time.

RLI PHILOSOPHY

“Having leadership skills does not alone assure good Rotary leadership. An effective Rotary leader must ALSO have Rotary knowledge, perspective about where Rotary has been, where it is now going and a vision of what Rotary can be.”
Save the Dates!

All RLI divisions are invited to send representatives to the 2010 International Curriculum Committee meeting that will be held on January 8, 9 & 10, 2010 at Orlando, Florida, USA. More information coming.
